It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Russ McConnell, a beloved figure in the Brisbane basketball community.
Russ’s love for the game began at Mitchelton High and continued to grow through his involvement with Lang Park Basketball Club and the University of Queensland Basketball. He went on to coach at Lang Park and various schools, including Chapel Hill Primary and St Peters Lutheran College, where he was known for his dedication to mentoring young players. He also proudly coached the Women’s Uni GBL team.
As a life member of Lang Park PCYC and a long-serving board member at Brisbane Basketball Inc., Russ’s impact extended well beyond the court. He was a tireless volunteer at state league, QBL, and NBL1 games, and even played music at games, much to the amusement (and occasional embarrassment) of his children.
Russ McConnell’s legacy is one of passion, dedication, and love for the sport of basketball. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his influence will live on through the countless lives he touched.
